چکیده

W use a controlled experiment to analyze gender differences in stereotypes about risk preferences of men and women across two distinct island societies in the Pacific: the patrilineal Palawan in the Philippines and the matrilineal Teop in Papua New Guinea. We find no gender differences in actual risk preferences, but we find evidence for culture-specific stereotypes. Like men in Western societies, Palawan men overestimate women’s actual risk aversion. By contrast, Teop men underestimate women’s actual risk aversion. We argue that the observed differences in stereotypes between the two societies are determined by the different social status of women. Data, as supplemental material, are available at http://dx.doi.org/10.1287/mnsc.2016.2505.

Offspring sex preferences among patrilineal and matrilineal Mosuo in Southwest China revealed by differences in parity progression

Son preference predominates in China, yet there are patterned exceptions to this rule. In this paper, we test whether lineality (patrilineal versus matrilineal inheritance and descent) is associated with son versus daughter preference among the ethnic Mosuo (Na) of Southwest China. Our results show (i) an increased probability of continued fertility among matrilineal women after having a son co...

Nurture affects gender differences in spatial abilities.

Women remain significantly underrepresented in the science, engineering, and technology workforce. Gender Di erences in Competitive Inclination and Educational Outcomes: Evidence from Three Ethnic Groups

Recent experimental techniques that isolate the preference for competition has found men to be much more competitively inclined than women (Niederle and Vesterlund, 2007). This evidence leads to an intriguing hypothesis: gender di erences in competitive inclination can explain gender inequality in economic outcomes, such as those in a developing countries context. This paper rst tests whether e...

Kin and Child Survival in Rural Malawi : Are Matrilineal Kin Always Beneficial in a Matrilineal Society?

This paper investigates the impact of kin on child survival in a matrilineal society in Malawi. Women usually live in close proximity to their matrilineal kin in this agricultural community, allowing opportunities for helping behavior between matrilineal relatives. However, there is little evidence that matrilineal kin are beneficial to children. On the contrary, child mortality rates appear to...
